The Pirates and the 20,235 vocal fans at PNC Park had much to like from this Memorial Day matinee, a 2-1 late victory against the Chicago Cubs …
Ross Ohlendorf pitched seven strong innings, charged with one undeserved run.
Garrett Jones homered and doubled.
Bobby Crosby’s pinch-hit RBI single scored Jones after the latter to break a 1-1 tie.
And Octavio Dotel closed it out with a strikeout for his 11th save and the official end of the team’s five-game losing streak.
Even the weather cooperated, with pockets of thunderstorms all over the county but somehow dodging the North Shore.
Nice day, right?
Well, forget it all and focus instead on what reliever Evan Meek called “the play that won this game,” a defensive gem by third baseman Andy LaRoche that might have been, in its own way, among the Pirates’ best this summer.

Shortly after he was hired as the club’s general manager in September 2007, general manager Neal Huntington completed a thorough organizational assessment, after which he came to one concerning conclusion — the team didn’t have nearly enough depth.
Over the next two seasons, the latter of which ended Sunday, Huntington went about addressing — albeit often in a publicly unpopular manner — that lack of depth. The roster turnover this year alone has been both jarring and startling, though Huntington has, unquestionably, improved the overall organizational depth.
Regardless, that still leaves Pirates fans stirring, with one lingering question: Does any of this put Pittsburgh closer to winning again?

Daniel McCutchen, after a turn of events, will make his Major League debut in 2009 after all. McCutchen has been named the Pirates’ starter for Game 1 of Monday’s doubleheader against the Reds at Great American Ball Park. Paul Maholm, as already scheduled, will start in the nightcap.
McCutchen had been scheduled to start for Team USA in the upcoming World Cup tournament, an opportunity that was going to cost him the chance to join the Pirates for the final month of the season and get his feet wet in the big leagues.
However, with the need for a spot starter on Monday and the expectation that the Pirates will need a fill-in starter throughout the season’s final five weeks, management nixed its earlier decision to send McCutchen to Europe.

Garrett Jones probably summed up the prevailing relief in the Pirates’ clubhouse after Monday’s 9-5 victory over the Brewers the best. And he didn’t have to say much.
To understand the relief laced in that statement, you have to understand what this club has gone through over the past three weeks. Unleashing all that cooped up frustration from a trying month of August and a dismal road trip, a scuffling Pirates offense finally showed some life, for which they were aptly rewarded. A five-run third, punctuated by seven hits and 10 at-bats, aided the Pirates in snapping a four-game losing streak in front of 12,478 at PNC Park.

Apparently, all Garrett Jones needed was a chance.
After four-and-a-half seasons in Triple-A and one brief Major League stint with the Twins in 2007, Jones was handed an opportunity by the Pirates at the start of July and parlayed that into an everyday role almost immediately.
By the end of the month — one in which he led the National League in home runs and slugging percentage — Jones was the talk of a clubhouse that was begging for some sort of positive distraction from all the simultaneous player movement.

That was the overwhelming question after a frenzied nine-day period in which the Pirates shipped off three-fourths of their starting infield and six players in all with the July 31 non-waiver Trade Deadline. Expand the time frame to the past two months, and two-thirds of the starting outfield is gone, too.
It’s been a trying two months for fans and players alike. And the questions — some laced in anger, others in frustration, still more in resignation — have poured freely. When will this organization be in position to win? Which players will still be around? Is there really a plan? What is there left to offer fans in the present? And most importantly: When will this revolving-door finally stop revolving?

Shortstop Jack Wilson, one of the staples of this season’s trade market, was dealt by the Pittsburgh Pirates to the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday as part of a seven-player deal.
Going to the Mariners along with Wilson is right-hander Ian Snell. The rebuilding Bucs received a five-player package from Seattle, headlined by top catching/first base prospect Jeff Clement. Also going to Pittsburgh are shortstop Ronny Cedeno and a trio of right-handed pitchers — Aaron Pribanic, Brett Lorin and Nathan Adcock. Wilson, 31, a 2004 All-Star, batted .267 in 75 games with the Pirates.
