Pitt’s improved pass D will get tested by Irish

Posted by GameSetMatch on 12th November 2009

One of the biggest reasons for Pitt’s recent surge has been its improved pass defense. This week’s game against Notre Dame will show just how much better the Panthers have gotten at protecting their air space.

“This will be a major test,” Pittsburgh defensive coordinator Phil Bennett said. “If there’s a better throwing team in the country, I don’t know who it is.”

A few weeks ago, a visit from Jimmy Clausen, Golden Tate and Michael Floyd might have spelled disaster for Bennett’s defense. Buffalo shredded the Panthers for 433 passing yards and four touchdowns, and NC State dealt Pitt its only loss thanks to 322 yards in the air and Russell Wilson’s four passing touchdowns.

No. 14 Pitt looks to regain offensive rhythm

Posted by GameSetMatch on 5th November 2009

Pittsburgh’s offense was playing so well, the Panthers almost didn’t want a week off.

The timing was there, so was the consistency. Bill Stull was effectively spreading the ball among receivers Jonathan Baldwin, Dorin Dickerson, Mike Shanahan, Oderick Turner and Cedric McGee. Dion Lewis was averaging nearly 150 yards rushing over a three-game stretch.

The 14th-ranked Panthers had everything going during a 41-14 victory over South Florida on Oct. 24 in which they didn’t punt once, only to be forced to shut it down during an off week.

The Panthers (7-1, 4-0 in Big East) probably would have preferred to keep playing after averaging 34.25 points in their first eight games, or nearly a touchdown per game more than at this point last season.

Pitt center set for showdown with Rutgers

Posted by GameSetMatch on 14th October 2009

Pitt center Robb Houser arrived at spring drills last March with his body noticeably out of proportion.

The 6-foot-2, 285-pound senior boasted the thick biceps of a Division I lineman — and one spindly, undersized leg.

“My arms,” he said, “were bigger than my right leg.”

Through a lot of work, he has evened things out.

Houser, who sustained a gruesome, season-ending right ankle injury in last year’s 54-34 loss to Rutgers, will meet the Scarlet Knights (4-1, 0-1 Big East) again in a nationally televised game Friday night.

Penn State's recruiting class gets another boost

Posted by admin on 15th July 2009

During this morning’s recruiting scorecard, I speculated whether Penn State had jumped ahead of Michigan for the Big Ten’s top recruiting class.

The Nittany Lions picked up their seventh ESPNU 150 Watch List prospect in wide receiver Alex Kenney. Of Penn State’s 13 verbal commits for 2009, more than half appear on the watch list. On one hand, Penn State would have looked pretty bad had Kenney not committed. After all, the kid is from State College. But keeping solid local prospects at home hasn’t always been a guarantee for Penn State in recent years, so Kenney’s pledge is a good sign.

The Sporting News’ College Football 2009 has named four Penn Staters to its pre-season All-America teams and recognized six Nittany Lions on its All-Big Ten team.

A trio of juniors — linebacker Navorro Bowman (District Heights, Md.), tailback Evan Royster (Fairfax,Va,) and center Stefen Wisniewski (Bridgeville) were selected second team pre-season All-Americans and first team All-Big Ten. Senior defensive tackle Jared Odrick (Lebanon) was named a Sporting News third team pre-season All-American and first team all-conference.

Penn State Football: Nittany Lions land two defensive linemen

Posted by admin on 29th June 2009

Penn State took a big step toward beefing up its future front four this past weekend.

Defensive linemen Evan Hailes and DaQuan Jones — rated four-star recruits by Scout.com — gave verbal commitments to Penn State coach Joe Paterno at a football camp for seniors on campus. That raises the Nittany Lions’ total to 10 recruits for the class of 2010, and half of those are from Western Pennsylvania.
