Steelers’ Moore proving more and more valuable

Posted by rsanrel on 9th October 2009

Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Ham telephoned yesterday on another matter. Eventually, the conversation turned to his old team. Who doesn’t sit up and listen when one of the NFL’s all-time greats talks about the Steelers? Without prompting, Ham brought up “that little No. 21.” He gushed about third-down back Mewelde Moore.

“He’s a guy who’s really stood out for me because he’s such a productive player,” Ham said. “When they need plays made out of the backfield, he makes them. He just does all the right things out there.”

Turns out Ham isn’t the only member of the Moore fan club.

It’s a sizable group inside the Steelers’ locker room.

“This guy is a professional,” coach Mike Tomlin said.

“A rare cat,” offensive coordinator Bruce Arians called Moore because of his “unique skill set” — his ability to block blitzing linebackers and beat linebackers, safeties and even the occasional cornerback on pass routes.

“The Chain Mover, we call him,” quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said.

It’s hard to say Moore is the most reliable player on a team that has tight end Heath Miller and defensive end Aaron Smith, whose performances always seem to be somewhere between terrific and extraordinary. But he would be in the top five. Earlier in the season, when some NFL scouts were knocking starting running back Willie Parker for losing a step and backup Rashard Mendenhall for being a No. 1 draft bust, they said Moore is too important on third downs and in the two-minute offense for the Steelers to use him in the featured role even if he might be their best runner.

Want a guy to pick up that blitzer looking to knock Roethlisberger into next week? Moore is your man. “He’s so good at it that I don’t ever have to worry about his guy because I know he’s going to block him,” Roethlisberger said.

Need a man to catch a 9-yard pass on third-and-8? Moore is the guy, at least when wide receiver Hines Ward and Miller are covered. Five of his 11 catches this season have gone for first downs, including the third-and-4 play he turned into a 19-yard touchdown against the San Diego Chargers Sunday night by bowling over safeties Eric Weddle and Steve Gregory. Seventeen of his 40 catches last season produced first downs. “He just understands the passing game so well,” said Ham, who isn’t too old to remember how difficult it was for him, as an outside linebacker, to cover that kind of back. “He doesn’t just flare out to the side. He understands how to get open, and he’s got good body control and good hands to go with it. A lot of running backs don’t have all that.”

Roethlisberger talks the talk at WWE event

Posted by GameSetMatch on 6th October 2009

Big Ben did a lot of talking, but no wrestling in his off-day appearance at Monday Night Raw last night.

Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger laid the verbal smack down as guest host of World Wrestling Entertainment’s cable television show that was broadcast live last night from Wilkes-Barre.

Since Roethlisberger’s involvement with the wrestling show was announced last week, his participation was questioned because it came in the middle of the Steelers’ season. But Monday is the players’ day off, and Big Ben used the occasion to take his offensive linemen with him to Wilkes-Barre.

Max Starks, Willie Colon, Trai Essex, Justin Hartwig, Chris Kemoeatu and injured lineman Darnell Stapleton helped their quarterback fend off a challenge by the Big Show and Chris Jericho midway through the two-hour scripted program.

Roethlisberger admits fear of serious foot injury but says he’s OK

Posted by GameSetMatch on 28th August 2009

Ben Roethlisberger says he feared he was seriously injured last week after he heard a popping sound when teammate Max Starks accidentally stepped on the Steelers quarterback’s right foot during practice. “It is a pretty scary thing to have a 300-pound guy step on the back of your foot, on your Achilles,” Roethlisberger said Wednesday while discussing the injury for the first time. “He went down, too, so you know he didn’t just graze it.”

Roethlisberger apparently bruised his Achilles’ tendon — the team hasn’t disclosed the exact nature of the injury — during the final half-hour of the Steelers’ final training-camp practice at Saint Vincent College on Thursday.

While he limped badly after being knocked over by Starks, a 340-pound left tackle, Roethlisberger wasn’t rushed off the field for treatment, as is commonly done with almost every significant injury. Roethlisberger was checked by trainers, who put an ice pack on the back of his foot, and he watched the rest of practice while sitting on an ice chest.

Distractions loom in Pittsburgh as Steelers, Big Ben start camp

Posted by admin on 30th July 2009

Just two weeks ago, there was little reason to worry about the Pittsburgh Steelers heading into the 2009 season.

The Super Bowl XLIII champions lost only two starters in the offseason. No major medical or contractual issues were lingering. Heck, with the Steelers’ successfully completed quest to “win one for the other thumb” — the club’s record sixth Super Bowl ring — perhaps its biggest challenge was to come up with a catchy slogan to mark their next title drive.

Authorities won't look at Roethlisberger

Posted by admin on 23rd July 2009

Law enforcement officials in Nevada have no intention of opening a criminal investigation into allegations Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger raped a woman at a Lake Tahoe hotel-casino a year ago, the sheriff’s department said Wednesday.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputy Teresa Duffy said the accuser would have to file a criminal complaint to trigger an investigation into the incident the woman says occurred during a celebrity golf tournament last July while she was working as an executive VIP casino host at Harrah’s Lake Tahoe. “The victim is the only one who can do that,” Duffy told The Associated Press. “Unless there was a third party that actually witnessed the incident, which according to the civil case, was not the case here.”

Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger: Who's No. 1?

Posted by admin on 24th June 2009

The 2004 NFL Draft class is probably going to go down in history as one of the best ever

The 2004 NFL Draft class is probably going to go down in history as one of the best ever. Not counting the drama that unfolded in New York with Eli Manning being taken first overall, then being traded to the New York Giants for Phillip Rivers and others, there were four signal callers taken in the first round. The first chosen was Manning. There was little doubt that Manning was going to be the first selected. He had an amazing college career at Ole Miss, and with the same last name as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, he had to be taken. The only problem was, Eli had told the Chargers, who held the first pick, that he was not going to play for them. Having no choice but to take him, the Chargers did, and the insanity began.
