The Pittsburgh Steelers are working closely with troubled quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to make sure he turns his life around, although coach Mike Tomlin didn't offer any specifics Wednesday about what the team is doing. Tomlin said he talks regularly with Roethlisberger, who recently underwent a behavioral evaluation as part of the six-game suspension handed down April 21 by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

"He has a commitment to being what we desire for him to be and what his team needs him to be and that's my focus," Tomlin said. "I've seen Ben quite a bit and communicated with him quite a bit throughout all of this."

Roethlisberger was suspended after a 20-year-old Georgia college student accused him of sexual assault in March. No charges were filed.

The Steelers should start Dennis Dixon at the beginning of the season.

With Ben Roethlisberger focusing more on taking advantage of ladies than football this past off-season, the Pittsburgh Steelers need a new starting quarterback for the first 4-6 games of the upcoming season. As of right now, it sounds as if Byron Leftwich will be that starting quarterback. However, if rumors are true that Dennis Dixon has looked good, then it might be best for Pittsburgh to choose him as the starter. Let’s be honest; there is no way Roethlisberger will ever be traded while he is still an elite player. And at the same time, Leftwich is a serviceable backup, but not the type of player that teams will be yearning to have.

Teams will always seek young quarterbacks. Players like Brady Quinn are traded on a regular basis. Suppose Leftwich starts the beginning of the year, and lives up to expectations. Nothing will change. But, if Dixon starts, and plays well, he has instant trade value. And the Steelers could be shipping away an undrafted player, and get quality value in return. It is a tough risk for a team that is clearly in win-now mode. But if they want to win now, and win later, Dennis Dixon should be their man at the beginning of the season.

Ben Roethlisberger awaits his fate from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers are waiting for NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s ruling on whether the quaterback will face disciplinary action from the league. League sources believe that Goodell will suspend Roethlisberger for at least two games this season. Roethlisberger’s possible suspensions stem from two sexual assault accusations in the past year and a half. Although the Steelers star has not been charged with a crime in the wake of these accusations, Roger Goodell has stated that Roethilsberger did break the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

While Ben Roethlisberger may be a free man, it seems that he has alot of work to do to repair his image and win back the fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Many seem to be done with the off field issues that have plauged Roethlisberger, and some believe that the Steelers should trade or release the quaterback who has led the team to two Super Bowl wins. While it is expected that the Steelers keep Roethlisberger, they did trade troubled wide reciever and former Super Bowl MVP Santonio Holmes, dumping Roethlisberger would not be a complete shock.

There's still a tomorrow for the Pittsburgh Steelers, all they could have asked for only days ago. There's also a next week for the Baltimore Ravens, or exactly what they didn't want.

Jeff Reed's 38-yard field goal put Pittsburgh ahead with 5:25 remaining and the Steelers finally preserved a fourth-quarter lead, beating rival Baltimore 23-20 on Sunday to further jumble the complicated AFC postseason race. The Steelers (8-7), their season seemingly ended by a late-season five-game losing streak, followed their last-second 37-36 victory over Green Bay with another tight victory helped by Reed's three field goals and Rashard Mendenhall's touchdown run. Now, their final regular season game at Miami will have some meaning, although the Steelers could win and still be eliminated.

According to the NFL, the Ravens (8-7) will clinch an AFC wild-card playoff spot if they win Sunday at Oakland. The Steelers must win and hope for some losses as the Jets, Ravens, Broncos, Texans and Pittsburgh all go into the final weekend with the same record.

"It's been do or die for us for a while, fighting to the last minute. We're like the cardiac kids," said Ben Roethlisberger, who threw a touchdown pass while becoming the first Steelers quarterback to pass for 4,000 yards in a season.

Troy Polamalu called an audible Sunday, and it helped make for a triumphant return for the Steelers' strong safety. Polamalu ditched the knee brace he wore during pregame warm-ups yesterday. Not coincidentally, the five-time Pro Bowler made a key interception as well as four tackles in the Steelers' 27-14 win over the Cleveland Browns at Heinz Field.

Polamalu had worn a brace last week in practice to protect his left knee, which he sprained in the Steelers' season opener Sept. 10.

"I tried going in warm-ups with the brace, and it just wasn't going to happen," Polamalu said. "There was no way I could keep up with any receiver, so I kind of gambled a little bit and thank God it worked out."

Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Ham telephoned yesterday on another matter. Eventually, the conversation turned to his old team. Who doesn't sit up and listen when one of the NFL's all-time greats talks about the Steelers? Without prompting, Ham brought up "that little No. 21." He gushed about third-down back Mewelde Moore. "He's a guy who's really stood out for me because he's such a productive player," Ham said. "When they need plays made out of the backfield, he makes them. He just does all the right things out there."

Turns out Ham isn't the only member of the Moore fan club.

It's a sizable group inside the Steelers' locker room.

"This guy is a professional," coach Mike Tomlin said.

"A rare cat," offensive coordinator Bruce Arians called Moore because of his "unique skill set" -- his ability to block blitzing linebackers and beat linebackers, safeties and even the occasional cornerback on pass routes.

"The Chain Mover, we call him," quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said.

It's hard to say Moore is the most reliable player on a team that has tight end Heath Miller and defensive end Aaron Smith, whose performances always seem to be somewhere between terrific and extraordinary. But he would be in the top five. Earlier in the season, when some NFL scouts were knocking starting running back Willie Parker for losing a step and backup Rashard Mendenhall for being a No. 1 draft bust, they said Moore is too important on third downs and in the two-minute offense for the Steelers to use him in the featured role even if he might be their best runner.

Want a guy to pick up that blitzer looking to knock Roethlisberger into next week? Moore is your man. "He's so good at it that I don't ever have to worry about his guy because I know he's going to block him," Roethlisberger said.

Need a man to catch a 9-yard pass on third-and-8? Moore is the guy, at least when wide receiver Hines Ward and Miller are covered. Five of his 11 catches this season have gone for first downs, including the third-and-4 play he turned into a 19-yard touchdown against the San Diego Chargers Sunday night by bowling over safeties Eric Weddle and Steve Gregory. Seventeen of his 40 catches last season produced first downs. "He just understands the passing game so well," said Ham, who isn't too old to remember how difficult it was for him, as an outside linebacker, to cover that kind of back. "He doesn't just flare out to the side. He understands how to get open, and he's got good body control and good hands to go with it. A lot of running backs don't have all that."

Since when did the Steelers go all Tony Gonzalez-Antonio Gates-Dallas Clark in their passing game?
This is a team that has three tight ends on its roster and treats them as the literal definition describes them. They are tight ends, players who line up next to the tackles, block and serve as a bailout target for a quarterback in trouble.

Gonzalez caught 96 passes as Kansas City's tight end last season before he moved to Atlanta this year. Clark caught 77 last season with Indianapolis and has 26 this season. Antonio Gates, whose career high is 89 receptions, has 24 with San Diego through four games.

Then, there's Heath Miller of the Steelers. He, too, had a career high last season, 48 receptions. Those were the most by a Steelers tight end in 15 years, since Eric Green set a team record at the position with 63 in '93.
