Crosby, Malkin point Penguins to 2-1 series lead over Senators

Even faced with the constant attention of the Ottawa Senators’ top pair of defensemen, Sidney Crosby keeps finding ways to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Crosby had a goal and an assist, Evgeni Malkin scored his third playoff goal, and Pittsburgh beat Ottawa 4-2 on Sunday night to take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference series.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 20 saves and Alexei Ponikarovsky and Bill Guerin also scored for the defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins, who won their second in a row following a 5-4 loss to the Senators in the series opener.

His first 50-goal NHL season isn’t quite in the bag, but center Sidney Crosby skated several strides toward that elusive plateau on Monday night.

Crosby’s third hat trick, and the fifth of his five-year career, fueled a 5-4 victory against the Buffalo Sabres at Mellon Arena. Crosby’s 37 goals are tied with San Jose center Patrick Marleau for the league lead.

“It always helps when Sid has a game like he did (last night),” goalie Marc-Andre Fleury said after stopping 30 shots, including 20 of his final 22 faced. “That was huge.”

As was this victory for the Penguins, who improved to 2-6-0 against the Eastern Conference’s elite – Washington, New Jersey and Buffalo, the lone three clubs ahead of them in the standings.

The Penguins overcame a 3-1 deficit against a top defensive team and goalie Ryan Miller, a Vezina Trophy candidate and the likely starter for Team USA at the Vancouver Olympics later this month.

Center Jordan Staal’s 14th goal and two by Crosby within a minute and 25 seconds turned that deficit into a two-goal advantage late in the second period.

“We were concerned,” Staal said after snapping a 12-game goal drought. “We haven’t had one of those comeback wins in a while.”

The Penguins (35-21-1, 71 points) have won a bunch lately. They are on a 9-5-0 stretch – not an elite measure of excellence, as defenseman Brooks Orpik suggested, but good enough to climb within a point of New Jersey for the Atlantic Division lead.

Ex-Penguin Mark Recchi knows Sidney Crosby too well to think that his current slump might be a long-term condition.

“It’s just one of those things where he’s in a rut right now,” Recchi said after tallying his 900th career assist in the Boston Bruins’ 3-0 victory over Pittsburgh. “It won’t be very long he’ll be in it, I know that. He’s a great player and when they break out, they can go the opposite way, and everything they touch turns to goals.”

Crosby recorded only two shots and was held without a point for the fifth straight game — four was already a career worst — and the Penguins were shut out for the second game in a row. Pittsburgh has not scored in 149 minutes, 9 seconds and has lost three straight games — all away from home — after opening the season 7-0 on the road.

Pens captain Crosby optimistic for opener

The Penguins’ Sidney Crosby practiced Tuesday at Southpointe for the first time since leaving an exhibition game at Columbus last Thursday with tightness in his groin area. Crosby said he is not 100 percent but is optimistic of playing against the New York Rangers on Friday when the Penguins open the regular season at Mellon Arena.

Evgeni Malkin did not practice, though he is neither injured nor sick. Coach Dan Bylsma plans to spot players off-days when possible during the regular season, and that was the case with Malkin yesterday.

• The Penguins signed Martin Skoula to a one-year contract worth $575,000, and he will open the season as the club’s extra defenseman. Skoula is a nine-year NHL veteran and played for Colorado’s 2001 Stanley Cup championship squad. He has a history with current Penguins assistant coach Tony Granato dating to their days together with the Avalanche.

Brodeur says Sid can lead Canada to gold

Team Canada’s old guard will be looking to the young blood in the locker-room to help the country recapture Olympic glory in Vancouver, veteran goalie Martin Brodeur said Wednesday.

The 37-year-old New Jersey Devils netminder doesn’t know many of the baby-faced players expected to make the squad for the 2010 Winter Games. But he does know that a guy named Sidney Crosby will be the cornerstone of what he predicts will be a talented team. Brodeur, who backstopped Canada to an Olympic gold medal in 2002, is excited by the chance to play with the 21-year-old star, who recently led the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Stanley Cup. “I’m sure he wants to capture this gold medal and I think this is the type of player that we’re looking to to bring us to the next level,” the three-time Olympian said.

Crosby to bring Stanley Cup home to Nova Scotia for his birthday

Sidney Crosby will have a special present for his birthday this year. And he will be the one bringing the gift.

A source told Metro Halifax that the Pittsburgh Penguins captain, who turns 22 on Aug. 7, is bringing the Stanley Cup home to Cole Harbour, N. S., and Halifax that day. The Cup has been making an annual pilgrimage to the hometowns of the champions in recent summers. The organizing committee would not confirm the date Crosby would have the trophy, but told the paper an announcement is expected shortly.
